Executive Director, Dr Miiro Farooq CBE capacity building workshop at Ernest Cook University
Over 150 academic staff from diverse disciplines convened at Ernest Cook University from 17th to 18th April 2026 for a high impact capacity building workshop facilitated by Dr. Miiro Farooq, PhD. The training focused on strengthening institutional alignment with Competency-Based Education [CBE] standards as guided by the National Council For Higher Education [NCHE].
The two-day workshop brought together participants from both health sciences and the humanities, creating a multidisciplinary platform for engagement on structured to combine theoretical perspectives with practical, hands-on sessions, enabling particiupants to critically examine existing teaching approaches while collaboratively developin strategies suited to effective CBE delivery.
Speaking during the engagement, the Vice Chancellor of Ernest Cook University, Prof. Micheal G. Kawooya, commended Dr. Miiro Farooq for his expertise and impactful facilitation. He emphasized the importance of continous capacity building and called for extended, faculty-based training to further support academic staff in implementing CBE. Prof. Kawooya noted that the proposed next phase will focus on developing, piloting, and validating a comprehensive institutional CBE framework ahead of the next academic cycle.
He also encouraged Dr. Miiro to contribute to scholarly discourse through publication, particularly highlighting his forthcoming book, Issues in Education for Innovative Socioeconomic Transformation In Uganda: A Wake-Up Call For Higher Education Institutions In The VUCA World, which is expected to inform ongoing conversations on education reform.
A follow-up workshop has been scheduled for Saturday, 25th April 2026, at Ernest Cook University. The session will focus on depeening practical competencies and enhanvcing institutional readiness for the implementation of CBE.
Dr Miiro has facilitated similar engagements across several higher education institutions, including Mountains of the Moon University and the Islamic University in Uganda [IUIU], where he has trained Heads of Departments and Deans. He has also contributed to capacity-building initiatives supported by the Islamic Development Bank [IsDB], working with institutions such as Makerere University, IUIU, UNITE, and the National Curriculum Development Centre [NCDC].
